Safeguarding

Tonight’s Panorama episode shared disturbing stories of abuse, and mishandling of abuse reports in the church. Much of the focus was on the Diocese of Lincoln, and the failure of two previous bishops of Lincoln to act appropriately on information they received. In recent years, the Diocese has worked very hard to bring these injustices to light, to work with police, and to support victims of abuse.

Inevitably, when stories of abuse are shared, memories are stirred, and some find new courage to report their own experience.

If today’s reports stir anything for you, you can contact the the Diocesan Safeguarding Team who have worked closely with police throughout Operation Redstone. You can find other points of contact on our Safeguarding Page. And of course, if you would like to speak with the rector or one of the clergy, you can contact us on 01472 822 172.

Right at the heart of our faith is the belief that each person is made in the image of God, infinitely beloved, and worthy of care. Abuse violates that belief, as does every failure to take abuse seriously and report it appropriately. We cannot un-do the past, but we can commit ourselves now to justice. If you have experienced abuse, and you tell someone in the church, will believe you, take action (through the Diocesan Safeguarding team and the police), and stand with all who want and need support.
